How to Install a Firestick — Physical Setup & First Connection

Published June 2025 · FirestickHub Editorial Team

What Does 'Installing a Firestick' Actually Mean?

Installing a Firestick refers to physically connecting the device to your television and completing the initial setup. Unlike installing software, a Firestick installation is a hardware process — you are connecting a small streaming device to your TV's HDMI port and powering it on for the first time.

This guide covers the physical installation process. If you want the complete step-by-step first-time setup including Wi-Fi and Amazon account configuration, see our complete Firestick setup guide.

What's in the Box?

Every Amazon Fire TV Stick comes with the following items:

Check that the remote has batteries installed before your first use. They are usually pre-inserted but occasionally need to be checked.

Physical Installation: Step by Step

Step 1: Locate the HDMI Port on Your TV

The Fire TV Stick plugs into an HDMI port on the back or side of your television. HDMI ports are rectangular connectors, usually labelled HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or similar. Most modern TVs have 2–4 HDMI ports.

Note which HDMI port number you are using — you will need to select that same input on your TV after plugging in.

Step 2: Plug in the Firestick

Push the Fire TV Stick directly into the HDMI port. It should fit firmly without excessive force. If the port is in a tight space behind the TV, use the included HDMI extender cable: connect the extender to the port first, then connect the Firestick to the extender. This improves Wi-Fi signal reception.

Step 3: Connect the Power Cable

Connect the micro-USB power cable to the port on the side of the Firestick. Connect the other end to the included USB power adapter, and plug that into a mains socket. Using the supplied Amazon adapter is recommended — some TV USB ports may not supply enough power.

Step 4: Turn On the TV and Select the Correct Input

Turn on your television. Use your TV's input or source button to select the HDMI port that the Firestick is connected to. You should see the Amazon Fire TV startup screen within a few seconds.

Installation Tips

For the Best Experience

  • Use the HDMI extender if the Firestick won't fit flush — this also improves Wi-Fi signal
  • Plug into a mains socket rather than a TV USB port for reliable power
  • Choose an HDMI port furthest from other cables and devices to reduce interference
  • Position your router as close as practical to the TV for the best Wi-Fi signal

Installation Problems

No signal on TV

If you see a blank screen after plugging in, check that you've selected the correct HDMI input on your TV. Try pressing the Source or Input button on your TV remote and cycling through inputs until you see the Fire TV screen. If still no signal, try a different HDMI port.

Firestick not powering on

Check the USB power cable is securely connected to both the Firestick and the adapter. Check the mains adapter is plugged in and switched on. Do not use a TV USB port as a power source — use a mains socket instead.

Remote not working

The remote usually pairs automatically during first boot. If it doesn't, press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds with the remote close to the Firestick. See our Firestick remote pairing guide for full instructions.
