Firestick Remote Not Working — Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Published June 2025 · Updated September 2026 · FirestickHub

When a Firestick remote stops working, it is usually one of a small number of causes. This guide works through them systematically.

1. Check the Batteries

The most common reason a Firestick remote stops working is flat batteries. Open the back of the remote and replace the AAA batteries with new ones. Even batteries that test as partially charged can cause intermittent remote issues.

2. Check Distance and Line of Sight

Alexa Voice Remotes use Bluetooth, not infrared, so they do not require direct line of sight to the Firestick — but distance matters. Try moving closer to the TV and Firestick when pressing buttons.

3. Re-Pair the Remote

The remote may have lost its pairing. Hold the Home button on the remote for 10 seconds while pointing it at the Firestick. If this doesn't work, remove the batteries, unplug the Firestick from power for 60 seconds, replug, wait for the startup screen, then reinsert the batteries and hold Home for 10 seconds. See our full Firestick remote pairing guide.

4. Bluetooth Interference

Other Bluetooth devices near the Firestick can sometimes interfere. Move other Bluetooth devices away temporarily and test. HDMI extenders can also help by positioning the Firestick — and its Bluetooth antenna — away from the back of the TV.

5. Volume/Power Buttons Not Working

Volume and power buttons on the remote use infrared and require line of sight to the TV (not the Firestick). If they're not working, check that you have set up TV Controls (Settings > Equipment Control) and that nothing is blocking the remote's infrared emitter at the top. See our guide to setting up TV controls.

6. Use the Fire TV App as a Temporary Remote

If your remote is completely unresponsive, download the Amazon Fire TV app on your phone and use it as a temporary remote while you troubleshoot. Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Firestick.

7. Reset the Remote

If pairing attempts fail, reset the remote entirely. Hold the Back, Menu, and left directional button simultaneously for 12 seconds. The remote will restart. Then try pairing again by holding Home for 10 seconds. See our full remote reset guide.

If you cannot get the original remote working and need a replacement, Amazon sells official Fire TV remotes compatible with most Fire TV Stick models. Third-party compatible remotes are also available.
