A factory reset returns your Firestick to the state it was in when it left the factory — all apps, settings, and accounts are erased. This is the most thorough troubleshooting step and also the one to take before selling or giving away your device.

When to Factory Reset a Firestick

Method 1: Factory Reset via Settings

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, go to Settings
  2. Select My Fire TV
  3. Select Reset to Factory Defaults
  4. Select Reset to confirm
  5. Wait 5–15 minutes for the process to complete

Method 2: Factory Reset via Remote Shortcut

If you can access the Firestick but want a faster route: press and hold the Back button and the right directional button simultaneously on the remote for 10–15 seconds. A factory reset screen will appear. Confirm to proceed.

Method 3: Recovery Reset (Stuck Device)

If the Firestick is stuck and you cannot access menus: with the device booting, simultaneously hold the Back button and the right directional button on the remote until a factory reset screen appears (10–20 seconds). Confirm.
