If you've just bought a Fire TV Stick — or are thinking about getting one — this guide walks through every essential step from unboxing to streaming. No technical knowledge required.
What Is a Firestick?
A Fire TV Stick is a streaming device made by Amazon. It plugs into your TV's HDMI port and connects to your home Wi-Fi. Once set up, you use it to watch TV channels, films, live sport and on-demand content through apps installed on the device. It is not a satellite box or cable receiver — all content comes through the internet.
For a full explanation, see our complete guide to what a Firestick is.
What You Need
- A television with an HDMI port
- A home Wi-Fi connection with broadband internet
- A mains power socket near your TV
- An Amazon account (free to create at amazon.co.uk)
- AAA batteries for the remote (usually included)
You do not need a smart TV, a cable subscription, or Amazon Prime. A standard TV with HDMI and broadband Wi-Fi is sufficient.
Setting Up Your Firestick in 5 Steps
- Plug the Firestick into an HDMI port on your TV. If it is a tight fit, use the short HDMI extender cable in the box.
- Connect the USB power cable to the Firestick. Plug the other end into the included mains adapter and into a wall socket.
- Turn your TV on and press the Source or Input button until you see the Amazon Fire TV startup screen.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your Wi-Fi network and sign into your Amazon account.
- Once the home screen loads, you can install apps or enter IPTV credentials if you have an IPTV subscription.
